Hello!!

Hello!! My name is Mai Karaki. I'm 20 years old and in the 2nd grade at the University of Yamanashi. My major is international culture and I'm going to take phonetics course.

I belong to tennis club and practice hard. I have very strict rules in my club, for example, if I'm late for the club starting time, I have to run to the top of the nearby mountain.

I have many hobbies. I like sports, music, movies, reading, sleeping, eating... When I was junior high school student, I had done karate and I have a black belt. I have worked part-time at McDonald's.

Next February, I'm going to study in Australia for 10 months. It is my first time to go to study abroad. I'm so excited but a little nervous.

I'm glad to see you in this opportunity. I'd like to chat to you many times and about meny topics very much!!

Hello Mai! This is David Murcko. I was intrigued by how dedicated you are to tennis. You must work very hard. Running to a top of a mountain if you are late...that takes a lot of skill. Impressive.

I played tennis for a few years, but I forgot most of it after high school started because I got lazy.
I also did karate, but that was when I was very young. I was 5 when I started and stopped when I was 10. I didn't get very far though, only an orange belt I think. That's cool how you have a black belt. I wish I had one.

You're going to Australia? That's awesome! It sounds like you are going to have fun. Don't be nervous about traveling abroad. You will be fine. I went to London for 2 years when I was 10, and then Switzerland for 3 years when I was 13. So that was quite a transition. But overall, it was a wonderful experience. You will enjoy.

Your English is very good. Very well spoken. What kind of music do you listen to? What movies do you watch? I have too many favorite movies. I wish to hear more.

Hope to talk to you soon (^_^)

Hello Mai!

Thank you for the comment on my blog. (^_^)
I liked your blog entry very much. In high school, I played tennis. That seems really harsh, running to the top of a mountain!? Here we have to run 'laps' around the track usually. In college, I used to do Aikido. I want to practice Aikido again, but my studies take up a lot of my free time.

May I suggest, for future reference: usually in spoken English, we say "I did karate" or "I used to do karate", instead of "I had done karate". Otherwise, your English is very good! I'm quite impressed.

Also, our school system is different; we call our grade levels differently. "1st grade" would be called "Freshmen". We call "2nd grade" in high school and college "Sophomore" instead. I am a "Junior", which is your equivalent of "3rd grade". And finally, "4th grade" would be called "Senior" instead.

I'm very glad to talk with you as well. I enjoyed reading your blog post, and I look forward until next time. :)

Nice to meet you Mai. Your tennis club sounds really hard! I don't know much about tennis, but I also used to do karate in elementary and through junior high school.

We mostly did kenpo (拳法) and jujitu (柔術), which I did for about 7 years. For the last 3 years or so I started practicing kendo (剣道) too, which I really loved. Our school's original kendo teacher was from Japan, so the classes were very strict as well, but I don't think we ever had to climb a mountain as punishment!

What kind of karate did you do in junior high?

Thank you so much for commenting me!! Running must be good for my physical strenghth, but it is hard work.
Oh! Have you played tennis? In Japan, there are less people having played tennis. So I'm very happy to know that. You played karate, too? You are a good sport man, aren't you?
Thank you. Now, I'm very excited going Australia. You went alot ob countries!! I envy you.
Can I have question? You mean that you went to London from 10 to 12, or, from 8 to 10?
Thank you very very much for praising me. I love music, especially Western music, which means American and europian music in Japan. I got to love Western music when I was 15. Then I listened to Avril, P!nk, Green day, Sum41, and so on. I like to listen to R&B, POP, ROCK, PUNK, many genre. How about you? And in America, who are the hot artists now?
Movies, I watch many, too. My favorit movies are "Star Wars" and "I am Sam". I like moving movies, and also comedy. How about you, Dave?

Thank you so much for commenting me!! Yes, it's sooooo harsh for me. Last Saturday, I ran 2 TIMES in a day because I couldn't get to the club 2 times. Actually, I have to reform my life.
Thank you very very much for correcting my English!! I feel I stepped up in English.
Fantastic! Did you enjoy Aikido? I'm sorry that you can't practice Aikido because of your study. But it is important to study rather than doing Aikido, or something. Now, I have no free time, too and I always wish that we have more hours than 24 hours in one day. But it is needed to endure something I wanna do to go my goal.

Thank you so much for commenting me!! You seem to like Japanese original sports. I'm happy that you are interested in kendo, and any other Japanese sports. By the way, can you do seiza(正座), which is to sit erect with one's legs folded under one. During budou, we need to sit propery, however, I hate it!
I used to do kyokushin karate(極真空手), which wear a protecting equipment and hit and kick, not pretending. I practiced kata(型) and kumite(組手). Kata is just like dancing, doing alone and moving as supposing the enemies attack me. Kumite is like fighting. I like kata very much.

Yep, we were only allowed to sit in seiza so we got used to it. Sometimes in tournaments we would have to wait in seiza for so long that we couldn't stand up, haha.

We were a light-contact school (no armor in kumite, light hits to the body, no hits to the head), so our kenpo was mostly focused on kata and not much kumite.
